Driver compensation problems relayed to committee
The National Academies of Sciences’ Transportation Research Board was launched and is responsible for studying the effects of different driver compensation on safety and retention.
During a recent driver compensation committee meeting, industry data on drivers current pay structure and lack of overtime was presented. OOIDA Board Member Doug Smith spoke out against a pay-by-the mile system, stating the system forces many drivers to work nearly 70 hours per week to make a living wage.
In January, The National Academies of Sciences’ Transportation Research Board driver compensation committee was launched. This committee is responsible for studying the effects of different driver compensation on safety and retention. They are testing this through hourly pay, pay for detention time and other pay methods executed in the industry.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2021 the median salary for heavy-haul truck drivers was $48,310. The OOIDA members explained to the committee that the average wage does not consider that many truck drivers are working 60 to 70 hours per week to make that amount.
Currently, many truck drivers are not compensated for the vehicle load and unload time, equipment checks, or pumping fuel by the pay-by-the-mile system. Schneider reviews pay regularly to ensure it is market competitive and can retain professional, safety-minded drivers. Last year, Schneider updated its pay structure for many of its drivers to help compensate for non-driving time.
