EPA climate rule for heavy-duty trucks to take effect March 27, 2023

With the goal of improving the climate and reducing air pollution, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing a final rule on heavy-duty trucks taking effect on March 27, 2023.
The program set by the EPA will reduce air pollution, including ozone and particulate matter (PM), from heavy duty engines and vehicles across the United States. The program includes the new emission standards that are much stricter and cover a wider range of heavy-duty engine operating conditions compared to the current standards.
Manufacturers and fleet owners will need to comply
The new emissions rules will be beginning with model year 2027 large trucks and engines, which means it is time for fleets to start planning procurement strategies.
Matthew Sears, executive director for global regulatory affairs at Cummins, explained that engine manufacturers will be responsible for certification and compliance with the latest heavy-duty standards, which will require new technology. Spears said he doesn’t anticipate the technology interrupting fleet operations.
According to the published rules by EPA, the emission reductions will increase over time as more new, cleaner vehicles enter the market. According to the latest regulations, warranties will be extended to 450,000 miles from 100,000 miles and the useful life of a covered commercial vehicle to 650,000 miles from 435,000 miles.
The new rules are the first move in the EPA’s three-step Clean Truck Plan.
