DOT approves use of oral fluid drug tests in trucking

The Department of Transportation approved a change to drug testing that will now allow employers to include oral fluid testing.

The additional testing will become available June 1, 2023, but the deployment will depend on the Health and Human Services Department certifying at least two laboratories. The additional testing option is intended to help employers prevent cheating on urine drug tests and provide a less intrusive solution that still achieves the safety goals of the program. 

There is still no change to the request for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to share hair testing results. Currently, drivers who fail the hair test can still get jobs with other carriers because businesses can’t share results on the clearinghouse.
